This Is How You Might Be Making Your Kids Feel Unwanted (Without Realising It)

We love our children more than anything-but sometimes, in the rush of daily life, our words or actions may send them a message we don’t intend. A message that says: “You’re not wanted right now.”

Harsh, isn’t it? But it happens to the best of us.

The sigh when they call us for the fifth time. The distracted “hmm” while scrolling through the phone. The comparison to the more “well-behaved” cousin. We don’t mean harm-but kids are sensitive little souls. They pick up on tone, mood, and attention. And sometimes, they silently wonder: Am I a burden? Am I too much?

Let’s talk about the unintentional ways we may make our children feel unwanted-and how to gently shift those patterns.

1. Brushing Off Their Excitement

That endless chatter about dinosaurs, or the drawing they made with 13 pink crayons? When we say “Not now” or “I’m busy,” too often…

💔 What they hear: “You and your world don’t matter.”
❤️ Instead, try: “I want to hear this! Can you tell me in five minutes?”

Even a delay with care can help them feel valued. A hug or a glance at their drawing can go a long way.

2. Constant Correction Without Connection

"Don't touch that."
"Why are you like this?"
"Look at your sister-she listens!"

We think we’re guiding. But without warmth, it starts to feel like rejection.

💔 What they feel: “I’m not good enough.”
❤️ Try balancing discipline with love: “I know you’re excited, but let’s do this safely.”

Correct the behaviour, not the child.

3. Not Noticing When They’re Hurt

Kids don’t always say “I’m sad.” Sometimes they throw tantrums. Or get unusually quiet. And if we dismiss it as “drama”...

💔 They feel: “My feelings don’t matter.”
❤️ ️ Say instead: “You look upset. Want to sit with me for a minute?”

Let your lap be their safest place.

4. Comparing Them to Others

“She’s smarter than you.”
“He behaves so well-why can’t you?”

Even as a joke, it cuts deep.

💔 What they hear: “You’re not lovable as you are.”
❤️ Celebrate your child’s uniqueness. Every child blooms differently-some like lotuses in calm ponds, some like marigolds in messy courtyards.

5. Being Physically Present but Emotionally Absent

We’re in the same room-but on our phones. We nod without listening. They feel it.

💔 What they sense: “I don’t matter enough for your full attention.”
❤️️ Even 10 minutes of undivided, joyful presence is better than an hour of distracted time.

Try a silly dance together in their comfy cotton kurta or twirly frock-that laughter is healing.

Our children don’t need perfection. They need presence. They need to know they’re wanted, just as they are-in pajamas or party wear, in silence or song, in chaos or calm.

So let’s remind them:
“I see you. I hear you. You belong.”

Dress them with love, hug them with joy, and make every moment feel like home.
